Theo Mueller (48) was one of the outstanding halfbacks of the late 40’s. He scored 17 touchdowns in 1947.

Ralph Hagberg (52) was one of the all time greats in the 212 Conference history and  in BLHS history.  He led the conference in scoring and led the Bison to a basketball championship in 1952.

Jim Schafer  (53)was an All Conference halfback in 1952, but missed his entire senior year due to a broken leg he suffered in an airplane crash. Vern Fischer (53) excelled in track, baseball, basketball and football.  He was one of top athletes in the conference for two years.

Milan Wehking goes up for shot against Sacred Heart in in the Buffalo Lake gym, 1955.  Wehking is one of the best athletes ever to play at BLHS.

Dale Moritz (55) was the first outstanding distance runner in the 212 Conference.  An all around athlete, his best sport was track where he set records in the mile whereever he ran.  In 1955, not only did Moritz win the Mile Run in the Conference, District 12, and Region 3 meets, he set records in all of them.

Members of the 1955 Conference Track Champions.  Left to Right: Dale Rettman was the conference champion in the 880, Dewey Strande was an outstanding middle distance runner.  Milan Wehking was an outstanding High and Low Hurdler.  Dale Moritz was the outstanding  distance runner in the area for three years.

John Briese (58)  was one of the outstanding linemen in the 212 Conference for two years  He was an All Conference selection in 1956 and 1957. He was also the first wrestler in the 212 Conference to win District and Region titles.

Before the 212 Conference started tournament wrestling in 1960, John Briese won the 175 pound class in the District 12 and Region 3 Tournament.  Coach Bob Putzier started wrestling at BLHS in 1956.

Key members on the 1960 BLHS track team were: Gary Johnson, Glenn Rettman, Merle Bryan, Stuart Johnson and Ed Roepke.  Although the team lost the Conference title to Stewart, they won the District 12 and Region 3 titles. Bryan, Rettman and Roepke went on to Mankato State College and had outstanding careers. Veteran coach Clint Perkins is pictured

1961 BLHS All Conference football players were: 5’10 165 pound guard, Larry Mackey. 6’4, 185 pound end, Denton Jakobitz.  6’0 185 pound fullback Wayne Ahlbrecht.


The Bisons new head football coach, Paul Solberg with new assistant coaches Ron Hestad and Wally Ness. Captains for the    1961 Bison football team were Brad Baysinger, Del Senst and  Wayne Ahlbrecht.

 


1963 Basketball Captains Steve Glaseser and Dennis Peterson with head coach Ron Hestad.  Glaeser and Peterson were outstanding all around athletes for the Bison in the early 60’s.  Hestad was an excellent basketball player at Luther College.  In his three years at BLHS, his record was 47 wins and 13 losses.

Curt Henschke (145) finished the 1968 season with a 19-1 record in conference matches.  Pat Roiger (127) finished his career with a 38 and 0 record in conference matches.  He was “champ” in the 95, 103, 112 and 127 weight divisions.

The Richards Brothers were outstanding all around athletes for Buffalo Lake High School in the mid 1960’s.  Left to Right: Tom (65), Bob (66), and John (67) were among the best half-backs in the 212 Conference during their time at BHS.  They also excelled in basketball, baseball and track.

 

 

Larry Jakobitz (68) was one of the outstanding linemen in the 212 conference in 1967 and 1968.  He was a two time all conference selection in 1967 and 1968.  He also excelled in basketball and set school records in the shot put.

Twin brothers, Paul and Phil Willians,were 6’5 forwards on the successful basketball teams of the late 1960’s.  Paul (on the floor) scored over 1400 points in his career. Phil (53) was also a standout player. Both boys were four sport athletes at BLHS.

Paul Moritz (74)was a three time 212 All Conference selection a linemen.  He is the only football player to make The All Conference team as a Freshman in 1970.

1974 880 Yard Relay Team. Left to Right: Paul Michelson, Joel Schraan, Dan Jakobitz, and Mark Jakobitz placed 4th in the State Meet in the 880 Yard Relay. The 1974 team went undefeated through out the year and won the 212 Conference, District 12 and Region 3 track meets. They set records in the Conference and District meets.
