The Renville Indians won their first 212 Conference Championship since the fall of 1954. Basketball Coach, Jerry Vanek took over the football duties for the season and finished the 212 league schedule 7-0 and 8-1 for the year. Renville's toughest game of the year was an 8-0 victory against runner-up Brownton on the first game of the conference schedule. Great team depth and outstanding running speed allowed the Indians to dominate conference statistics and standings. Speedy halfbacks Doug Wertish and Dan Smith led the running game, and quarterback Mike Dolan passed for 1044 yards on the season. The Indians scored 274 points on offense for a 30.5 points per game average. On defense they gave up 48 points for a 5.3 per game average. Brownton finished up with a 7-2 season record. They averaged 25.1points of offense and gave up 5.8 points of defense. Brownton's only losses of the season came to an undefeated Gaylord team in the Tomahawk Conference and an 8-0 loss to Renville.

The Brownton Bears won the 1970 Dual Meet Conference Championship with a perfect 7-0 record in the conference and a 13-0 over all record. Top wrestlers for the Bears were Lee Hochsprung, 175, Fred Bipes, Hwt., Glen Alsleben, 165, Mark Katzenmeyer, 145 and Jeff Guerro, 112. Bird Island won its third straight conference championship by rolling up 96 points. Brownton finished a distant second with 75 points. The Panthers, coached by Jerry Smith, put seven wrestlers in the final round. Brownton put six wrestlers in the final round, but only two came out with a championship.
The Bears from Brownton also made history by winning their first District 12 Wrestling Tournament. Coach Jim Beshey's boys put together their finest outing by outscoring 1969 champion, Olivia, and Bird Island, Hutchinson and Glencoe. Olivia was leading the meet with two matches remaining. Brownton's Lee Hochsprung won over arch rival Steve Hackbarth of Buffalo Lake, 5-3. The heavyweight match would then decide the District 12 championship as number one seed, Brownton's Fred Bipes and number two seed, Curt Draheim of Olivia, would wrestle in a winner-take-all match, Bipes won, 1-0 in overtime.
Canby won the Region 3 meet held at Hutchinson. It came only a week after Canby dethroned perennial champion Tracy in the District 9 meet.

The Bird Island Panthers won the 1970
212 Conference Championship with a 7-0 record. The Panthers
toughest game of the conference season was the first game of the
year when Paul Weis of Bird Island and Renville's Mike Dolan
matched up in a battle of the two best lefties in the
conference. Bird Island managed an unearned run late in game
for a 1-0 win. Pitchers Paul Weis and Bryan Flann, catcher Jerry Lingl, infielders Keith Sharpe and Mark Coil, and outfielder Darly Peterson led the Panthers to a 13-1 season record. Their only loss came to eventual region champion, New Ulm. The top seeds in District 12 were; Bird Island #1, Olivia #2, Norwood #3, and Hutchinson #4. All of the top seeds advanced to the semi final round. In the semi-finals Bird Island beat Hutchinson, 5-4, and Norwood beat Olivia, 4-1. In the finals Norwood scored a 5-0 victory over the Panthers. Norwood's Steve Knight threw his 5th no-hitter of the season against BIHS. Norwood would lose to eventual Region Champion, New Ulm, in the first round. |
