Other first places winners for Renville were Steve Mulder in the discus and high jump, and Dan Smith in the 100 yard dash. Neil Sing of Hector won the 220 and 440 yard dash and placed second in the 100 yard dash. Danube's Ben Dykema broke the conference record in the pole vault when he vaulted 120. That broke the record of 113, set by Neil Schendel of Danube in 1967. Hector's mile relay team ran a 3.43.9 to break the record of 3.44.2 set by Buffalo Lake in 1963. Ben Dykema of Danube showed his athletic versatility when he broke the pole vault record and won the shot put. Dykema was the 212 Conference and District 12 Heavyweight Wrestling Champion. At 210 pounds, it was highly unusual for an athlete of that size to pole vault twelve feet.
