The Stewart Gophers and Hector Bulldogs tied for the 212 Conference Championship with 6 and 1 records.  In the second conference game of the year, Stewart beat Hector 31-7.  Stewart's only loss in the conference was to Renville in the fourth week of the season, 7-6.  Renville finished the conference season with a 5-1-1 record.  Their only loss was to Hector in the third week of the season, 7-6.  Renville and Buffalo Lake tied 13-13 in the first game of the year.  Hector averaged 20.8 points per game on offense, Stewart 17.2 and Renville 11.3. On defense, Renville only gave up a record setting 12 points on the season for a 1.3 points per game average.  Stewart gave up 5.0 points per game, and Hector 7.1. The 1965 season ended with the fewest offensive points scored since 11 man football started in 1954.  Hector's league leading 20.8 per game average was the lowest offensive average in conference history. Stewart's Ted Burke led the conference in scoring with 10 touchdowns and 4 extra points, and rushing with 768 yards.

At the annual fall conference meeting, discussions took place of the possibility of a football playoff game with another conference.  Stewart had been playing a ninth game of the season for several years against Cosmos, who was the prominent team in the Cro-Hawk Conference.  It was suggested to the committee of Ken Gulbrandson of Stewart, Grady Rostberg of Brownton, Carl Heilzen of Sacred Heart, to investigate the possibility of a championship game with another conference.

1966 212 Conference Basketball Champions:  Renville Indians

Kneeling: G. Eekhoff, mgr., Coach Vern Meehl, Coach Gordon Berquist, R. Lenz, mgr.

The Renville Indians continued their rich tradition of winning basketball by winning the 1966 212 Conference Basketball Championship.  It was 5th conference championship in the 1960’s.  Junior guard, Rob Anderson led a balanced scoring attack with 18.6 scoring average.  Forward, Mark Den Einde was the second leading scorer with a 16.8 average.  Dave Schoek, Gerald Mulder and Bob Throngard also averaged more than 10 points a game for the season.  The Indians finished the conference schedule with a 13-1 record with their only loss being to runner-up Danube, who finished with an 11-3 record.  The pre-season favorite, Bird Island finished in 3rd place with a 9-5 record. The conference was said to be as balanced from top to bottom as any year in history.  Many upsets took place in the year of 1966.

Stewart's Ted Burke led the conference in scoring for the 3rd straight year with a 26.1 average per game.  Burke finished with 1,801 points in his career at Stewart.  Danube's 5’8 guard, Larry Maurice, scored 51 points in a game against Sacred Heart.  This broke the conference record of 49 points that Bob Bruggers scored against Brownton on February 9th, 1962.  Maurice made 23 of 37 field goals and added 5 free throws.  His quarter scores were 6, 17, 10 and 18.  Coach Rod Black left Maurice in the game when he learned he was close to the record.  With 50 seconds left in the game, Maurice had the record and was removed from the game amid a thunderous applause from the Danube crowd.  In a regular season game Bird Island scored 105 points in a win over Stewart.  It was the second highest amount of points scored in the history of conference.

In District 12 competition, Renville was the 2nd seed behind the 1965 champion, Hutchinson.  They won games over Sacred Heart and Danube, but lost to Hutchinson in the finals.  Hutchinson went on to win the Region 3 Championship and the first round of the State Tournament.

In the Region 3 Tournament held at Brownton, Renville beat District 9 Champion, Minneota, 1-0, on a no hitter by Rich Ziegleman.  The Indians scored their only run in the 2nd inning on a botched play.  With Gerald Mulder on 2nd base, the bunt play was put on by coach Meehl.  The pitch was taken by the hitter, but Mulder raced for 3rd thinking the steal sign was given.  The throw from the catcher sailed into left field and Mulder scored the only run of the game.  In the other Region 3 game New Ulm beat Granite Falls, 7-0.

New Ulm won the region tournament by beating the Indians 2-0 in the final game.  New Ulm pitcher, Roger Zahn, allowed only 1 hit and struck out 19 out of 21 hitters he faced.  Mark Van Den Einde lined a single into right field with one out in the seventh inning to break up the no hitter, but was promptly picked off first base.  Then Zahn K’d the next hitter to face the minimum 21 batters.  Zahn won 6 games in District and Region play, allowing just 5 hits in 36 innings.  Ziegleman allowed 8 hits and gave up only 2 runs.

Renville finished the year with a 13-2 record.
