The Bird Island Panthers won the 1962 football championship to complete the biggest turn around in 212 conference history. The Panthers finished the 1961 season with a 1-7-1 record. With first year coach, Jim Denevan at the helm, BIHS went through the 1962 schedule undefeated with an 8-0-0 record. Bird Islands toughest opponent was the1961 co-champion Hector. Both teams were undefeated in the 3rd game of the season with Hector on a 10 game winning streak. In an outstanding defensive battle, Bird Island pulled off the upset, 7-6, over the conference favorite. Other tough games that BIHS had during the year were a 13-6 win over Tomahawk Conference favorite, Morton, and a 13-7 win over Stewart. Also, in the 3rd week of the season, Sacred Heart upset Stewart 7-0, to snap the Gophers 22 game winning streak. Offensively the Panthers were led by halfback Dick Bjur. Bjur gained 1138 yards and scored 12 touchdowns for the season. On defense, all-conference lineman, Ray Foesch and Ken Youngkrantz led the way. On offense the Panthers scored 165 points for a 20.6 per game average. On defense they gave up 37 points for a 4.6 per game average.

1963 Conference Wrestling Champions: Buffalo Lake Bison
The Buffalo Lake Bison won their 4th straight conference championship by scoring 95 points and out distancing runner-up Brownton, who finished with 74 points. Bird Island, in their first year of wrestling, finished 3rd with 71 points. Hector finished 55 points and Stewart with 38. The Bison had four conference champions. Brownton and Bird Island had 3 champions, and Hector two. Larry Baumgard, Buffalo Lake, and Larry Radloff, Hector were repeat champions.

The Renville Indians clinched the 1963 212 Conference Championship on the last week-end of conference play. Danube and Renville were tied for the conference lead with a 12-1 record heading into the last week of play. Third place Buffalo Lake upset Danube, 60-56, and Renville beat Hector, 78-54. It was Renville's 3rd conference championship since 1947. In District 12 play Renville was upset by Buffalo Lake in the quarter final round in a 3 overtime loss. In the semi-finals, Olivia beat Danube, 56-43, and Hutchinson beat Buffalo Lake, 50-38. Hutchinson beat Olivia in the championship game. Marshall went on to win the Region 3 and the State Tournament.

1963 212 Track Champions: Buffalo Lake Bison
The Buffalo Lake Bison won their 8th conference championship by piling up 73 ½ points. Hector was runner-up with 40 ½ points. The Renville track team did not compete in the meet because their bus was involved in a accident which killed two Brownton youths. Several members of the Renville team were shaken up in the accident. Four new records were set in the meet that was held in Hutchinson. Dennis Peterson of Buffalo Lake broke the high jump record at 59 Ό. The Buffalo Lake mile relay team of Mons, Baumgard, Werner and Mueller ran a 3.44.2 to break Stewart's record. Mike Werner of Buffalo Lake ran a 2.09.4 in the 880 yard run to break Merle Bryans record set in 1960. Bill Manthei of Danube pole vaulted 1011 to break his own 1962 record. Dennis Peterson of Buffalo Lake scored 20 points by placing 1st in the pole vault and low hurdles, and 2nd in the high Hurdles. Billy Manthei of Danube also scored 20 points in the meet by winning the pole vault and high hurdles, and placing 2nd in the low hurdles and high jump. Dave Mueller of Buffalo Lake placed first in the 440 yard dash, mile relay and 880 yard relay, and 2nd in the long jump.

1963 212 Baseball Champions: Hector Bulldogs

The Hector Bulldogs won their first conference championship since 1956 with a perfect 7-0 record. Outstanding players on the Hector team were catcher Jim Macik, shortstop Galen Johnson, centerfielder John Hauer and second baseman Chuck Keltgen. In district tournament play, Hector was eliminated by Glencoe in the semi-final round.
