1960 Conference Champions: Renville Indians
The Renville Indians won the 212 Conference basketball championship with a perfect 14-0 record. With all five starters returning from the 1959 district championship team, they rolled on to 20 straight victories before losing in the semi-finals of the district tournament. Junior center, Jerome Jacobs led the conference with a 23.1 average, but great team balance and team play by senior guards, Jim Dolan and Frank Standfuss and senior forwards, Jim Fredrickson and Len DeGree made Renville the best team in the league for 1959-1960 season. In District 12 tournament play, Renville was the number one seed and carried a 20 game winning streak into the tournament. Olivia was seeded 2nd, Buffalo Lake 3rd, Danube 4th, Hector 5th, Cosmos 6th, Bird Island 7th and Stewart 8th. Renville beat Norwood in a close game in the first round at Olivia, and then beat Stewart in another close game at Danube in the quarter finals. In the semi-finals in Olivia, Renville would play Danube. Renville defeated Danube twice during the regular season in the 212 Conference. In the other semi-final game Olivia would be playing Buffalo Lake at Glencoe. With the scoring of Bob Bruggers (34) and Red Zaske (19) and the rebounding of Tom Svobodny, Danube completely dominated the game and upset the number one seed. Danube then beat Olivia in the finals at Glencoe to win their first of three consecutive district 12 championships.
