1956 Conference Football Co-Champions:  Danube Hawks and Buffalo Lake Bison

     The Buffalo Lake Bison and the Danube Hawks tied for the 212 Conference Championship with 6 and 1 records.  Buffalo Lake's only loss in the conference was a 12-6 game at Hector.  Danube's only loss was to Buffalo Lake, 14-6.  Every game that Buffalo Lake played, with the exception of a 41-6 win over Sacred Heart, was a hard fought game that was usually decided in the 4th quarter.  Buffalo Lake's leading scorer and rusher was senior Doug Peterson.  Danube totaled 198 points on offense for a 24.8 per game average. On defense they gave up 82 points for a 10.3 per game average.  Buffalo Lake scored 129 points for 16.1 per game average. On defense they gave up 76 points for a 9.5 per game average.

Terry Frazee of Bird Island scored 5 TD’s in a 48-19 win over Sacred Heart.  Frazee scored a running TD in the first half.  In the second half Frazee and End, Gordy Klemp, switched positions. Klemp threw 80, 30, 38 and 30 yard TD passes to Frazee.  Frazee also kicked 5 PAT’s for a total a 35 points.  The most ever in a 11 man football in the 212 Conference.

1957 Conference Champions:  Bird Island Panthers

     The Bird Island Panthers won the 1957 212 Conference Championship with a 12-2 record.  They clinched the title in the last week of the schedule when they beat Sacred Heart 93-63.The Panthers won their last 9 games in conference play to out distance Danube who finished 11-3 in the conference.  The Panthers were led by four outstanding seniors. 6’4 Gordie Klemp, 6’4 Norm Seehusen, 6’2 Terry Frazee and 6’0 Rolf Rodmyre.  All four seniors averaged in double figures for the season.   Bird Island was the number one seed in the district, but was upset by the eighth seed, Norwood (Central) in the second round of the tournament.  Olivia went on to win the district by beating Hector 69-52 in the finals. Walnut Grove won the Region title.

1957 Track Conference Champions:  Buffalo Lake Bison

     The Buffalo Lake Bison won their 4th straight 212 Conference Championship at Glencoe.  They totaled 61 ½ points to out distance their rival, Stewart, by 22 points. Five records were broken during the 6th annual meet.  Stewart's Arvin Buss was the top scorer in the meet by placing 2nd in the 100 yard dash, 1st in the 220 and 1st in the 440,and 2nd in the Pole Vault, good for 20 points. Buffalo Lake's Cliff Fischer finished the meet with 16 points.

1957 Baseball Champions:  Stewart Gophers

       The Stewart Gophers defeated the Bird Island Panthers in the East-West playoff game, 4-3, in a game played at Hector.  Pitcher, Bobby Werner scattered 4 hits and struck out 9 to earn his 4th win of the season.  Stewart scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 5th inning to take a 3-2 lead. Bird Island tied the game in the 6th inning, but the Gopher's Arvin Buss, who started the inning off with a single, scored the winning run in the bottom of the inning.  Stewart finished the season with a 6-1 record.  Their only loss came in the first round of district tournament to Glencoe, 3-0.  The team's leading players were senior outfielders Arvin Buss and Arlen Lade, junior pitcher, Bob Werner, junior 1st baseman Johnny Pfaff, and sophomores, shortstop Delano Wacker and catcher, Eddie Kirchoff.
