On defense they gave up a total of 38 points for a 4.8 per game average.  Renville scored 190 points for a 23.8 per game average, and gave up 33 points for a 4.1 average.  It is believed by many that the class of 1955 was one of the most athletically talented classes in 212 conference history.  Every school had quality athletes that made it one of the most competitive conferences in the state.

1955 212 Conference and District 12 Champions:  Renville Indians

The Renville Indians won the 1955 212 Conference Basketball Championship with a 13-1 conference record.  Sacred Heart finished second with an 11 and 3 record.  Renville had three returning starters from their 1954 state tournament team.  6’6 center, Warren Brandt, forward Roger Duininck,  guard Chuck Huselid and 6th man Mally Bengston, all played major roles in Renville's success of 1953, 54 and 55.   What is considered to be one of the best teams in history of the 212 conference, Renville averaged 69.9 points per game on offense and gave up only 43.4 points per game.  Runner-up Sacred Heart averaged 62.9 points per game and gave up 56.2 points per game.  The Indians went on to repeat as District 12 Champions.  Renville beat Hutchinson 62-51 in the semi-finals before a standing room only crowd held at Olivia’s new gymnasium.  In the other semi-final game, held before a standing room only crowd at Hector, Sacred Heart beat Danube 64-53.  During the regular season, Sacred Heart gave Renville their only loss of the season.  The District final game between the schools featured a match up of two 6’6 centers, Warren Brandt of Renville and Vern Tebben of Sacred Heart.  Renville controlled the entire game as Tebben was held to 9 nine points and Renville’s Brandt scored 17. Mally Bengston scored 21 points and Chuck Huselid 16.  Sacred Heart’s Jerry Ashburn scored 24 points.  Renville went on to Gustavus Adolphus to play the Region 3 tournament.  In the first game of the region tournament they upset the region favorite, Walnut Grove, 48-47.  In the finals they lost a heart breaking game to Ortonville on a last second shot, 66-64.  They finished with a 19-2 record.
