1953 Conference Champions:  Danube Hawks

First year head coach Dale Halvorson continued where ex-head coach, Richard Brenchman, left off.  The Danube Hawks went undefeated for the 5th straight year.  The only blemish on the 35 straight wins was a 12-12 tie in 1949 against Stewart.  The Hawks won their last game of the year in 1948 and did not lose another game until the first game of the year in 1954.  Led by Co-Captains Larry Good and Red Reetz, the Hawks steam rolled over their 212 opponents by scoring 439 points of offense for a 54.9 per game average.  On defense they up 99 points for the season for a 12.4 per game average.  57 of the 99 points on defense were given up in the 4th quarter when back up players were in the game.  The team was led by 17 seniors, all of which played a major role in the winning streak.  Led by All-Conference twin brothers, Arvin and Arvid Reetz, Larry Good, and Roger Grund, the Hawks were bigger and faster than any team in the 212 conference. Danube also won the 212 conference in basketball and baseball during the school year of 1954.   The biggest game of the year for the 1953 Hawks was the 5th game of the season against the Bird Island Panthers. The Panthers were led by quarterback Bob Robinson and 3 time all-conference linebacker, Harvey Kienholz.  The game received a lot of press coverage and was built up to be the game of the year. A victory for DHS would give them a tie with Ivanhoe for the state record of most consecutive games won at 32.  Both teams went into the game undefeated.  With 6 different men scoring, Danube won the game, 52-13.  The Hawks went on to win their last 3 games of the season to push their game streak to 35.  1953 marked the last year the 212 conference would play 8 man football.  The Hawks went 0-9 in 1954.

1954 Conference Champions:  Danube Hawks

The 1954 Danube Hawks won their 2nd straight 212 Conference title by clinching the championship on the last day of conference play.  Although Renville beat Danube twice during the season, the games did not count for league standings.  In late February, Renville was upset by Bird Island and Bob Robinson's 39 points for their conference loss. Danube beat Hector to take the league lead.  The Renville-Danube rivalry would go on to be the best in the conference.  Both schools had some of the best basketball players in the conference on their roster.  Before both schools built their new gymnasiums in the early 50’s, people would line up at 5:30 P.M. to get into the gym.  Danube was led by the seniors, 6’3, Larry Good and 6’1, Red Reetz, and junior center, 6’4 Delton Roelof.  Renville was led by senior forwards, 6’3 Roger Agre and 6’3 Roger Wassenaar, 5’11 guard Bob Westby, and juniors 6’5 Warren Brandt, 5’11 Roger Duinick, and 5’8 guard Chuck Huselid.   Athough Danube won the conference with a perfect 12-0 record, they were upset by Buffalo Lake, 60-68, in the semi-final round of the district tournament.  Renville would go to win the District and Region Tournament and beat Hibbing in the first round of the State Tournament, 51-48. They lost to Bemidji in the semi-final round 44-46, and then lost the 3rd place game, 67-83 to Austin.

1954 Conference Baseball Champions:  Danube Hawks

The Danube Hawks won their third conference championship of the 1953-54 school year winning the conference baseball championship.  Danube beat Hector, 5-2 in the East-West playoff game.  The Reetz twins were the battery mates for the Hawks, while Larry Good got three hits in the game.  Danube won the right to play in the championship game by defeating the Renville Indians 2-1 for the West Title.  The game matched up two of the best “lefties” in the conference, Red Reetz of Danube and Roger Duininck of Renville.  Reetz gave up two hits and Duininck gave up four hits in the game.
