1952 Conference Football Champions:  Danube Hawks

The Danube Hawks stayed unbeaten for the 3rd straight year by winning the 212 Conference title with a perfect 6-0 record. Led by All-State quarterback, Shorty Schroeder, and All-Conference players, Red Reetz, Larry Good, and Arvin Reetz, the Hawks remained undefeated for 27 straight games.  Danube led the league in scoring with a 29.6 per game average on offense and 10.3 average on defense.  Danube's toughest game of the year was against Renville in the second game of the year.  Renville led 12-0 late in game when the injured Schroeder came back into the game and ran a 45 yard touchdown, and then with 50 seconds remaining in the game caught a 50 yard touchdown pass from Larry Good.  Both extra points were made good and Danube kept their winning streak alive.

1953 Conference Basketball Champion:  Danube Hawks

The Danube Hawks won the 1953 212 Conference Championship with a 11-1 record.  Their only conference loss came to Renville with two games remaining on the conference schedule. The Hawks finished the regular season with a 17-2 record.  Their other loss came to District 6 Champion, Madelia.  Seniors, Roger “Shorty” Schroeder and Gary Knutson, juniors Red Reetz and 6’3 Garry Good and 6’4 sophomore Del Roelofs were the starting line-up for the Hawks.  In District Tournament play, Bird Island upset the 1951 and 1952 Champions, Glencoe, in the quarterfinals.  Norwood beat Olivia, Renville got by Buffalo Lake, 44-41, and Danube trounced Hutchinson 53-36.  In the semi-final round Danube and Renville matched up for the third time of the season.  In a game where 45 fouls were called and 10 players fouled out, Danube was upset, 64-57 in overtime.  Renville outscored Danube 13-6 in the overtime period.  Renville made 30 out of 45 free throws, while Danube made 19 out of 40.  The Hawks led most of the game and had the ball for the last shot of the game.  Schroeder's 30 foot shot fell short and the game went into overtime.  Renville beat Bird Island in the final game of the district for their first District 12 Championship.  Granite Falls brought an end to Renville's season in the first round of the Region Tournament.  Granite Falls went on to win the Region Tournament and the first game of the State Tournament.
